Our house is under siege from a demented tufted titmouse.

By any measure, these cute little birds are aggressive. They will swoop down and help themselves to the hair of a sleeping dog or steal threads from your laundry drying in the sun to line their nests. But this particular titmouse is attacking our house windows.

I have read the aggressive male titmouses (titmice?) will see their reflections in windows and try to battle the competition. They establish themselves at the top of the pecking order in time for mating season.

That would explain why this particular titmouse appears to be on a mission. He is trying to eliminate the enemy. But from inside the house, it appears that he is trying to get in.

Tufted Titmouse Looking In

Outside my office window and my son’s bedroom window directly upstairs, the titmouse moves back and forth. He screams “Peter, peter, peter!” Then he bashes at the window, clings to the screen and pecks at the windowpane. After that’s done, he’ll do it all again, moving from the upstairs to the downstairs.

I have tried putting out a feeder on the tree outside to distract him, but that’s not working. If he’s still at his battle plan on Saturday, when I am not in the office and won’t have to sit in the dark, I’ll close the curtains to try and eliminate the reflection he’s taken such a dislike to.

In other bird news…

For the very first time since we have been living here, I saw a group of cedar waxwings. They are very skittish. I saw the first when I was driving down the long driveway from errands. Later, when I was eating lunch, I noticed an unusual group on the patio table. Yes!

Drat-it-all. I had to actually do some work this afternoon, which prevented me from sneaking about the back yard with my camera. I hope they return tomorrow.

The summer before last we had a completely crazy humming bird. He attacked any person or critter that walked out on the deck. The tailless cats took to a military belly crawl to try to get out into the garden. Good times

I have heard of Cardinals and Robins doing this but not Tufted Timouse. Intersting. I always hope the figure out that the bird in the window isn’t there. Poor things.

That second picture is almost a bit creepy. He looks positively evil.

How funny about the titmouse. We had the very same experience with a male cardinal the first 4 years we were in our house. And, apparently, he had done it to the previous owners as well. He even ruined some windows that were scratched beyond repair. He’s quit doing it though, I don’t know if he tired of it or decided that he liked us or that his reflection really wasn’t much of a threat! I talk to them all the time, too. They are such a fixture. I also loved your doves post – we’re sitting at breakfast right now watching about 15 of them milling around under the feeders ad occasionally hopping up onto the birdbath to take a drink. Thanks for all the stats, too. Fascinating!

    Hi All,

This doesn’t seem to be an uncommon event!

Here’s the update: The demented titmouse is still there. Closing curtains and blinds doesn’t deter him, so I am leaving them open so he can keep me company while I work. The cat is showing interest. And when we’re in other parts of the house we hear him knocking insistently on the windows.

I hope he finds another hobby pretty soon. Frankly, I’m a little worried about his mental stability.

It occurs to me that "Demented Titmouse" sounds like the name of a British headbanger band! Eh?

How funny, I just did a search on timouses attacking your house as a joke because we have a swarm of about 6-10 that are swooping around the house and darting under the eves. We had one land on the screen of our porch and it looked just like the second picture above. I see that photo and I hear the music from Jaws start up (or maybe Psycho) :) They are beautiful birds, I have just never seen them acting like this. I am guessing they are twitterpated. Thanks for the post, at least we are not alone!

I am cracking up about the above posts because I googled this just now because we have a demented titmouse at our windows. For over a week now, one single bird has chirped and banged at every window in the house. He wakes the entire family up at 5am every day and stops around 8pm. We’ve tried taping pictures of other birds to the windows, closing the blinds and also taping aluminum foil to the windows as someone suggested, but nothing works. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

Another Monday.

Harry and I spent the better part of the weekend painting the master bedroom. We traded off between rolling and detail work and we both made our fair share of messes. For a while Sophie perched on top of a chaise to supervise our work. Sarah was distraught. She does not like change.

Today we get back to normal. I will have to do something about my manicure. Speckled fingernails in Benjamin Moore Light Pewter is not really a good look.

Here’s wishing you a happy, calm and productive week.

If you’re in the neighborhood and just happen to have your paintbrush and paint clothes with you, stop on by. Harry and I are taking the day off from work to start painting the master bedroom. We figure it’ll take until Sunday. Harry does most of the rolling—no small chore with high ceilings—and I do all the tedious detail work. You, of course, can pitch in wherever you like.

We’re painting it a dove grey. So if you see some grey in my hair in the next few days, it’s paint. Got it? The grey is paint.

Happy Groundhog Day! What are you doing to celebrate?

We’ll have a special dinner of NOT groundhog. Dinner will be a special pasta (TBD) and some yummy homemade yeast rolls. Then we’ll pull out the photo album of past Groundhog Days and reminisce. We will toast Puxatawny Phil by opening the first bottle of my homemade apfelwein, which I hope is sparkly by now. If it’s any good, you’ll hear more about it.

Cheers!

Working from a home office is not always what it’s cracked up to be. I have a lousy IT department (me). Interruptions range from barking dogs to crowing roosters. I hear my business phone ring during non-business hours.

But there is a lot good about a 15 step commute. Such as today. It’s cloudy and a bit drizzly, but the temps will climb into the mid 60s for the second day in a row. I will turn off the heat, throw open the windows and give the house—and office—a good airing. Ahhh!
