A Bad Hair Day for Chickens
Last week the fellow who came over to cart off all my decrepit gardening equipment for repairs was admiring my chickens. He was particularly taken with the Polish hens and their feathered headdresses.
“They’re beautiful! Do you cut their hair like that?” he asked.
I swear. He really asked me that.
Of course, that was last week when it was dry and the sun was shining. The chickens looked all primped out and gorgeous. Not like today, after days and days of rain, when their “hair” is dirty.
Now the poor Polish hens look a little worse for wear. They are in need of a little chicken hair styling. Or at the very least a shampoo and blow dry.
They’re having a very bad hair day.

Too funny…I can’t imagine giving one of our ‘girls’ a hair cut. I can empathize with their bad hair day though…I’ve had a few of those in the garden myself!

Judging by the look of them, I can imagine his confusion. But he obviously doesn’t have much experience with chickens if he thinks anyone’s going to make them sit still long enough to get their hair done… without heavy sedatives. Haha.

Too cute! I have two eggs left. But as Scarlett O’Hare (or is it O’Hair) would say, “I’ll worry about that tomorrow.”

People just are too far removed from food sources these days and just don’t understand. By the way, is one of those chickens named Phyllis Diller, because that’s what they look like.

I agree with Carol. Very Phyllis Diller. Who could resist them?

I love Polish hens. My aunt raised them and I loved watching them in her yard as a kid. Thanks for the memory.

Oh yeah, my polish look just like that when it rains and gets muddy. So funny. How do you keep the others from pecking their top feathers out? Mine seem to always have a bit of a bald spot up there from the others.

Actually, I’ve never had trouble with any of the hens picking on each other. I don’t know if it’s because they’re all just fairly docile or if they’re busy with other thing. Perhaps giving them enough space and time outside so they don’t get bored and frustrated? Honestly, I don’t know why!
